Meredith
Willson's "The Music Man" tells the story of traveling salesman
Harold Hill's 1912 visit to River City, Iowa, where he meets and falls in love
with town librarian Marian Paroo. The fast-talking "Professor" Hill
convinces citizens to buy instruments and expensive uniforms in order to form
the River City Boys Band. The family-friendly musical won five Tony Awards in
1957, and became a feature film starring Robert Preston in 1962.
Performances
of "The Music Man" are scheduled for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and
Sunday, July 2, 3, 4, 5, in Veteran's Park Amphitheater as part of the
Springfield Arts Council's 43rd annual Summer Arts Festival.
Tim
Rowe will direct the production; Chris Moore is musical director, and Gary Geis
serves as choreographer.
